Lightning Ridge is one of those places that gets into your soul. It has a stillness about it despite the myriad of activities that take place there on a daily basis. The ‘Ridge’ as it’s fondly known is less than 2 hours drive west of us, making it a perfect spot and my favourite ‘outback destination’. A fortnight ago, David and I did a quick overnighter to refamilarise ourselves with the area. It didn’t disappoint. Apart from the novelty of visiting opal mines and seeing amazing sandtsone carvings underground we also stopped by the Coororan Lake. 12,000 acres of private grazing land is underwater in this previous dry lake bed thanks to the floods of 2011 and 2012. There use to be a dairy farm in the middle of the lake-hard to believe. My video technique was a bit shaky on this visit and the back ground noise is a bit distracting but you’ll get a bit of an idea what the area is like.
