At this point I would dearly love to be telling everyone that the flood water has receded and that it has stopped raining. Unfortunately, neither has occurred. Much of northwest NSW and southern QLD are in the grip of another impressive rain band which means it’s gumboot and dri-as-a-bone weather, still. With the property effectively shut down due to the continuing soggy weather we’re in caretaker mode, or at least I am. My parents have absconded to Sydney and dry ground leaving me ‘home alone’ since sunday, while David remains cut-off on the other side of the Boomi River.

It’s not so bad actually, although occassionally you get the heebies wondering if that 13,000 acres of water half a kilometer away is going to get any closer. The homestead surrounds have become a refuge for water-logged wildlife, with around fifty kangaroos strategically seeking shelter beneath various trees. Last night I awoke to the sounds of snuffling outside and this morning a rather bedraggled fox greeted me at the back door. A few minutes later a rather shabby ferral cat padded into the garage. It’s amazing how quickly we all learn, animal and human alike, to share space when required. Tomorrow I hope to get out on the quad runner to check water heights, untill then it’s back to that wonderful mail bag I collected on monday.
