Rockhampton is located on the Tropic of Capricorn and is approximately 40km’s drive from the Capricorn coast of the Pacific Ocean. It sits astride Queensland’s largest river, the Fitzroy and having walked along it last week, I have to say it is magnificent. The city was founded in 1855 and there are some wonderful colonial buildings along the riverfront. Wonderful sandstone and delicate iron lace work feature prominently. Six bull statues representing the main breeds of the area are situated throughout Rockhampton in recognition of Rocky’s Beef Capital of Australia title. The Gracemere saleyards on the outskirts of the city handle the largest number of export beef cattle in Australia and is the largest stud-selling venue in the southern hemisphere. It smells of cattle up here. There’s a railway line-for cattle, numerous pubs & restaurants that feature beef and quite a few skinny hipped cowboys trundling along the Mall late in the afternoon. As for the weather, it’s winter time and it’s a balmy 28 degrees. You gotta love QLD.
